Style Word of the Day

By sociofashi · October 27, 2008 · 0 Comments · 53 Views

Today's style word of the day is androgynous-pronounced-[an-droj-uh-nuhs].

It literally means man and woman.  In fashion, however, it means having both masculine and feminine characteristics.  An androgynous look could describe anything from an item of clothing to a persons actual physical appearance.

A good example of the androgynous look in clothing styles would be women's power suits that were highly popular in the 90's.  Women wore these tailored pant suits with huge shoulder pads to emulate men and look as powerful as them in the white collar workforce so that they could be viewed as equal.

A good example of the androgynous look as far as physical appearance goes, is the ever popular supermodel/actress Omayhra.  She graces the runway with a boyish appearance but with the gorgeous figure of a woman.  Designers love her specifically because she is the embodiment of androgyny.
